Take mastic gum with food, not on an empty stomach
For mastic gum, taking it with food matters far less for how much you absorb than for whether your stomach tolerates it. That flips the usual advice. Most supplements go down on an empty stomach for absorption. Mastic is a resin, it sits heavily, and plenty of people who try it first thing and feel rough are reacting to the empty stomach rather than to the resin.
Eat something first. The same 1000 mg usually goes down clean. Start there, then adjust the timing once your gut has settled.
Food first. Timing second.
Why form matters more than timing for mastic
Mastic is a natural resin harvested from a tree, not a salt or a chelate. There's no elemental weight to calculate, which is why you won't find a clean milligram equivalence to other gut products. What you get is a standardized chewable or capsule, usually 500 mg per piece, and the useful signal is how your stomach answers across 2 weeks of steady use.
Some people do fine on an empty stomach. Those people exist, and they should keep doing what works. Everyone else takes it after a meal and stops overthinking it.
What not to stack with mastic
If you take calcium, iron and zinc, give each one its own slot. Minerals compete for the same transport pathways in the gut, and three at once means one of them loses. Separate them by 2 hours, ideally with different meals, and you sidestep the whole problem without giving anything up.

That's the only stacking rule I'd defend. The rest is personal.
The scene I keep coming back to
A woman in her fifties came back after 3 weeks and said the first 4 days were miserable and the next 17 were fine. She'd been taking it at 6:30 in the morning with black coffee and nothing else, because a video told her an empty stomach was better. We moved it to lunch. No other change. She finished the box.
That 4 day window is the whole story for a surprising number of people, and it's almost always a food question. Not a dose question. Not a brand question. Food.
Run it for two weeks
Pick a meal you eat most days. Take your 500 mg with that meal. Hold everything else steady. Your limit here is simple. I can tell you what to try, and I can't predict which side of that line you land on. Resin tolerance is individual, and if you have a diagnosed digestive condition, your clinician's advice outranks mine.
Two weeks of consistency will tell you more than any comparison chart, because the only data that matters is how your own gut answers.

Keep a two line log
Write the time and how your stomach felt, nothing more. Two lines a day for 14 days gives you a record you can actually read, and it settles the question faster than memory does. Memory rewrites the first bad week once the second good week arrives.
If the log shows 10 rough days out of 14, stop and change something. If it shows 2 roughly and then nothing, keep going. Your own notes beat anyone's comparison chart, including mine.
One more thing. If lunch moves around, don't chase the perfect window. Take it with whatever meal you actually sit down for, even if that changes day to day. Consistency of pairing beats precision of timing for a resin, and you'll keep the habit longer.
